Welcome! We are so glad you found us after our name change.
We began thinking about a name change from Granny’s Recipe Box a little while ago. Why? We started the blog as a way to make sure that we kept alive our Grandmother’s tradition of cooking dinner and celebrating all of the things that happen as we gather around the table (like the Brown Sugar Coffee Cake below). Throughout the year we found that the more we cooked and baked, the more we changed recipes and developed new dishes. And we loved it!
Each month we sit down and come up with a plan for the weeks to come. We realized recently that we were really beginning to focus more on family dinners and entertaining and that the scope of our blog was outgrowing the name Granny’s Recipe Box.
Don’t worry. We still plan to make and remake Granny’s recipes, and even when we make up our own recipes, we are channeling her cooking knowledge, and well, charm. We come from a line of women who seem to do it all. Granny did everything. She somehow managed to bring people together around the table–from the time she was a little girl during the Depression to the time she was a full-time working mom running the household. Our mom also never failed in the kitchen. She managed to make feeding a family of six look easy with hot prepared meals almost every day. That takes a certain charm that we are still trying to find. From Charm to Table just feels like what we are trying to do in the kitchen everyday—channel the women we admire, who made all the things that happen around the table look and feel easy.
Also, we love the Farm to Table feel that the name evokes and we’ll always try to use local ingredients and dishes inspired by our farmers’ markets and CSA program whenever possible.

Oh, and since you made it this far into our message, here’s an amazing Brown Sugar Coffee Cake recipe for you. Of course, it’s one of Granny’s.

Brown Sugar Coffee Cake requires surprisingly few ingredients and is amazingly delicious. It is so moist and easy you’ll be making it all the time.
- 2 c brown sugar
- 2 c flour
- 1/2 c butter
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1 egg, lightly beaten
- 1 c sour milk * see footnote
- 1 tsp baking soda
Preheat oven to 350. Mix together the brown sugar, flour and cinnamon. Using a pastry cutter, add the butter until the mixture has the texture of very fine crumbs. Remove one cup of the mix and set aside to be used as a topping.
Make the sour milk and let stand 5 minutes. Add baking soda to the sour milk.
Add the egg and sour milk and beat until smooth. Pour mixture into a greased pan (11 x 7) topping with the reserved mixture. Bake for 30-35 minutes. Note that cooking times may vary by oven.
Making sour milk is extremely easy. Add 1 T vinegar (or lemon juice) to a measuring cup and fill to the 1 c marker with milk. Let stand for 5 minutes.
