Granny’s Golden Butter Cupcakes – with Candied Edible Flowers

Granny’s Golden Butter Cupcakes – with Candied Edible Flowers

This was the year my daughters would finally have a birthday party. When Jane turned one we had JUST moved into our new house, and when she turned two, we had JUST had another baby. So this had to be her year. Plus I found Granny’s recipe for Golden Butter Cupcakes and that find was a reason to throw a party in and of itself. Because the girls’ birthdays are only 3 weeks apart, a combined first and third birthday party sounded doable. We (I) decided on a Garden Party theme and got to crafting a few weeks in advance. Long story short, both girls got sick, the weather forecast looked terrible and the party was cancelled.

I was sad, but the girls didn’t seem to care or even notice. For Jane, her birthday was all about telling everyone “I”m not two, I’m three!” and running around with a balloon tied (loosely, calm down) around her wrist. And both girls were super excited about these Golden Butter Cupcakes.

My intern and her husband (my mom and dad) came to town to help me prepare for the ill-fated party, and the intern was everso helpful with the cupcake making. I used this frosting recipe by Live Well Bake Often for Cream Cheese Frosting (SO GOOD). We added some sprinkles into the batter and candied some edible flowers for the top – another recipe that Granny had in her box of tricks. The recipe called for pansies which are sadly out of season, but after some research, we decided to use mini roses and we were all thrilled with how they turned out!

All-in-all, I learned a lot about toddler/baby birthday parties the last few weeks: 1) They are a ton of work, 2) The parties are often a much bigger deal for the parents at these ages, and 3) Whether or not the party happens, the Golden Butter Cupcake recipe will make any day feel like a celebration. This is the only recipe I’ll ever use again for cake or cupcakes. I still feel bad that Jane has never had a birthday party, but hey, at least she had some pretty awesome cupcakes that day. And there’s always turning four (and two!).
